After School and Curriculum Programs
After School
After-school programs consist of level and age specific instruction. Advanced classes focus on tournament play. At PS 3’s Village Kids Chess team in 2016, we won 1st place out of 1000 participants at a CIS tournament for best team score in the unrated section.
In-School Curriculum
This is a great way to reach the entire school community and create a buzz about chess. Over 12 classes, each grade, from K-5th, learns how to play chess in their classroom along with their teacher. Chess is a proven method of helping students do better in testing.
Chess and art
In this program, art and chess combine to teach young children how to play the game of chess through designing and creating their own chess sets out of recycled materials. From the very first class, students start to build their own set from scratch. First they build a board out of a pizza box using contrasting squares and analyzing how to make 8×8 rows. In the next class, they build pawns and learn how to have a pawn race. This is one of the most successful and memorable ways for young children (4-7) to learn how to play chess.
Tournaments
We organize and run introductory chess tournaments as well as rated tournaments for the more seasoned player. Tournaments can be scheduled for schools.
