After 8 weeks of chess classes with PS 276’s Kindergarten classes, I move onto the third grade for 6 weeks. 5 year olds are so sweet. For our last class we had a chess party where students were able to play with all of the pieces. As I left, one student shouted: “I love you, coach Michah!” And then another echoed: “I love you, too, coach Michah!” As I was leaving the class room they were all telling me they loved me. Third graders are less sweet and much more competitive. It is the perfect age for a child to really absorb chess and delve fearlessly into tactics and theory. But they are already so rebellious with a side of attitude. I’m happy to have the challenge! Bring it on third graders, I’ll turn you into masters! And bye bye Kindergarteners. Let’s play a game of chess together again soon!
